Healthy Snacks – Nuts

Nuts are a good heart healthy snack full of unsaturated fats and nutrients, and they are a great food to eat if you need to lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol since they have a high amount of polyunsaturated fat. When it comes to snacking on these guys though you have to keep in mind that they are high in calories so keep an eye on the serving size and how much you are consuming. To help out with this here is a serving size chart for 1 oz. of nuts, and generally speaking there is about 150-200 calories per 1 oz. serving.

Nuts can also be a good alternative to some unhealthy foods and are a great way to add a little something extra to your meals.

  • Instead of croutons try adding a few nuts to the top of your salad. The best way to do this is to add them last to help keep their crunch and prevent them from getting soft.
  • Try making your own granola bars by adding a mixture of different fruits, nuts, and seeds. This is a much healthier alternative to a candy bar and you get to customize your own flavor.
  • Toss them in with sautéed vegetables. Toasted almonds and green beans always makes for a great combo.
  • Add a mixture of fruit and nuts to yogurt, oatmeal, and whole grain cereals for a healthy and filling combination.
